This is the first documentary that was approved by her estate.

A Whitney Houston biopic will be out next year, according to Entertainment Weekly. This is the first film that the late singer's estate approved since her tragic death in 2012. As a result, it features unreleased demos and performances from when she was a teen choir singer, whose mother happens to be Cissy Houston.

While the biopic won't gloss over Whitney's drug addiction later in life, it has a larger point.

"The story that is never told about Whitney is just how brilliant she was as an artist; by many measures she had the greatest voice of the last 50 years," says director Kevin Macdonald. "She changed the way pop music was sung—bringing it back full circle to its blues and gospel roots. She was also completely unique in being a black pop star who sold in countries where black artists don't traditionally sell."

The last film about Whitney Houston was Lifetime's Whitney, directed by Angela Bassett. She was friends with Whitney when they starred in 1995's Waiting to Exhale. But Whitney's estate implored that fans not see the film.

"If you watch this movie, watch it knowing that Lifetime is notorious for making bad biopics of celebrities and brace yourself for the worst," said Pat Houston, Whitney's sister-in-law.

Let's hope they have some better words for Macdonald's adaptation.
