Similar to Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls, the Sunday Reeds take their cue from nocturnal, reverb-kissed noise pop and shoegaze acts of the late '80s and early '90s, particularly groups like Black Tambourine, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and Joy Division.
Naming their group after a well-known Australian patron of the arts, Romana Ashton (vocals, bass) and Drew Jones (guitar) formed the Sunday Reeds in Melbourne, Australia in 2008. Drummer Andy Dawson joined the group in 2009 to round out its live sound. The Sunday Reeds' debut full-length, Drowning in History, was released on Squirrel Records in 2009. The album enjoyed a bit of buzz and radio play in Australia immediately following its release, and the band embarked on tours both in its homeland and in the U.K. in support of the album. The Sunday Reeds' sophomore effort, the Dark Rainbows EP, was produced by Kramer (whose credits include albums by Daniel Johnston and Galaxie 500), and was released on Squirrel Records in 2011. ~ Margaret Reges
