Hailing from Sheffield, the four-piece Situationists have shaken off the inevitable Arctic Monkeys comparisons thanks to their brand of spiky angular guitar pop, more akin to Bloc Party than Alex Turner and company.
Formed from the remnants of the hotly tipped but short-lived Umlaut in 2006, frontman Dan Shamplin-Hall, guitarist Sam Weatherald, bassist Nick Cox, and drummer Ralf Wilson recorded their first demo in a basement using two microphones bought from Poundland. This D.I.Y. approach found support from the likes of Steve Lamacq, Radio 1's Huw Stephens, and XFM's John Kennedy, who invited the group to play an X-Posure live session in Manchester. The bandmembers spent the rest of 2007 writing and recording new songs in their own temporary studio. A year later, they released their first EP, the limited-edition This City Holds Us All, through Tough Love Records. The Situationists also made the final 14 in Virgin Mobile's Road to V competition, supported the Futureheads in their hometown, and earned a slot on the BBC Introducing... stage at the Reading/Leeds Festival. ~ Jon O'Brien
