The Pi Thor Project is a freaking cool endeavor.
Inventive and progressive in performance, Greg soars at the stratospheric level with stinging riffs and cutting edge compositions that remain steadfast on his foundation of jazz / rock fusion. Founder of the Pi Thor - JAM Project and veteran of the strings for 30+ years,
Greg’s playing is layered and tasteful, floating from full speed improvisation to spacious soundscapes and chameleon-like variations. Greg crafts subtle and nuanced interpretations of his musical visions. Fleet in attack and delivery, his style mirrors those of his acknowledged mentors: DiMeola, Howe, McLaughlin, and Metheny. His acoustic phrasings are clearly influenced by Ottmar Liebert and Jimmy Page, but are then taken into an entirely new realm. In addition to electric and acoustic six and twelve string guitars, Greg also plays guitar synthesizer, bass guitar, autoharp and keyboards, in addition to programming percussion and electronic drums and assuming production and engineering duties.
The chops are here in abundance, as is the daring spirit required to play outside standard expectations of melody. One may call these instrumental tracks as Jazz-Rock Fusion, perhaps New Age, Progressive, Psychedelic or Avant-Garde. Whatever the genre, guitarist Greg Kosten has no need to be pigeon holed in such categories. His goals focus on the cutting edge, with each new composition as a challenge to reach toward new horizons.
Guitar works are created from various subjects such as Sci-Fi, progressive rock and past memories. Construction of instrumental tracks have a mathematical, scientific approach and the chosen subjects such as ‘Gliese 581’ or ‘The Fermi Paradox’ will have one looking up the definitions to increase their own knowledge and understanding of what it’s all about. Greg recalls his first guitar. “It was a jumbo Silvertone acoustic – a gift from my father when I turned age 9. I was so little that I could barely get my arm around the guitar to pluck the strings, but I carried that beast to practice every week. The guitar hangs on a wall now, retired due to wear and warpage, but it remains a symbol of inspiration and drive... never to quit.”
Australian keyboardist, Fiona Joy Hawkins, commented on Kosten’s acoustic work as ‘being outside the square as a really great thing - to have a unique and defining style is the 'x' factor everyone is looking for’. But acoustic guitar is only one facet with this project, the electric guitar is fast and wicked and utilization of a Godin/Roland guitar synthesizer is precision smooth.
John Fink from Finkster Productions finds Pi Thor creations as ‘very cool ideas with diverse, engaging music’. The Progressive Rock Portal of New York claims the Pi Thor-Jam Project as ‘a great music choice’ and Moscow keyboardist, Oleg Gurtovoy of the Russian Federation put it in more simple terms… “You play a very good stuff.”
Claudine's Gallery, NC sums it up...“Your guitar is astounding!”
