The main reason is that humanity is growing so dependent on it to the point where it cannot function without it.

Examples are "the internet of things." People tie more tasks to the internet and freak out when it doesn't work. The web as a whole was never designed to be that way but with the passing of the last 30 years it has become that way.

I tell people all the time that they are at the mercy of someone else who controls the access to their digital life and they either say "it will never happen" or "no I'm not".

Believe what you want, in the end it makes no difference to me. At the end of the day my digital life is kept offline incase something were to happen to the web. (Yes I am one of those people.) In 2005 I created my first myspace account and then I went to facebook. Lately facebook has been too intrusive into my private life so I made the switch back.

In the end I have a very dry view point when it comes to information technology as a whole because it is designed to fail at some point.
