Indie rock band the Coach and Four were formed in Memphis, TN, in 2001 by drummer Daniel Farris and bassist Tony Dixon, formerly the rhythm section with Staynless, initially as an offshoot of their instrumental side project, Breathe You Are Alive.
(They named the group after a dilapidated Memphis hotel.) Additional members were Brad Stanfill (guitar), Luke White (guitar), and Jon David Lovelace (keyboards). After building up a local following and touring regionally, the Coach and Four recorded a self-titled EP, which helped get them signed to Makeshift Records. Makeshift released their debut full-length album, Unlimited Symmetry, in January 2004. By the time of their second album, The Great Escape, released on February 20, 2007, the group's lineup was Farris, White, Stanfill, and bassist Brandon Robertson. ~ William Ruhlmann
