Formed in Toronto as the Airplane Boys, childhood friends Mannie Serranilla and Jason Drakes -- who used the names Beck Motley and Bon Voyage as aliases -- were a prolific hip-hop duo who built their reputation via a series of online mixtapes from 2011 onwards.
The act was part of the larger Beau Monde collective which also included Neon Gorilla, a production company which provided videos for the the Airplane Boys' key tracks. Their 2011 debut, Where've You Been, was largely produced by Carlo "Illangelo" Montagnese. 2012's Alignment made use of many more producers including Arthur McArthur and KMS, while 2013's Brave New World appeared ahead of a prestigious appearance at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. That summer also brought a collaboration with the DJ/producer Jealous Much? on the single, "What's Your Name Girl?" By the time the politically motivated Egos & Expectations appeared in 2014, the duo had not only shortened their name to APB, but their ambitious touring schedule had also seen them spread the word as far as the U.K. and Asia. ~ James Wilkinson
