Citing an obsession with the surrealist notion of transforming the mundane into the exotic, the Sonic Catering Band translates the sounds of their kitchen into stunning aural documents.
Based around a core trio of Colin Fletcher (b. 17 April 1966, Reading, Berkshire, England), Peter Strickland (b. 21 March 1973, England) and Tim Kirby (b. 3 August 1971, England) alongside a clique of regular collaborators including Colin Potter, Dan Hayhurst, Zsolt Sórés and Pál Tóth, the Sonic Catering Band echo the musique concrète processes of sampling artists Matthew Herbert and Matmos, deriving all of their sounds from the kitchen. Culinary activities - chopping, blending, frying, mashing, whisking and simmering - are metamorphosed into strange and sometimes beautiful recordings. After the band’s initial plans to perform in restaurant kitchens were thwarted by Health And Safety regulations, they released a series of recordings served on plate sized 10-inch discs packaged in pizza boxes. The First Supper series ran from appetizer to dessert, each of the five releases featuring a recipe revealing the cooking activity behind the track. The series’ menu included savoury tofu royale, rich lebkuchen cookies, kohlrabi, borscht soup and savoury mushroom canapés. These tracks were subsequently remodelled by experimental illuminati such as They Came From The Stars, I Saw Them, Nurse With Wound and Clare Connors for the Artificial Additives remix album. Associated gigs, some sponsored by Morphy Richards, featured the trio in chefs attire bent double over hobs, blenders, samplers and mixers. In 2002, the Sonic Catering Band released 1093 Budapest IX., Lónyay u. 7., Magyarország (22.09.2002 19.45-20.52) in an edition of just 10 copies on recordable compact disc. The release featured a single 67-minute track, a real-time recording of 10 CD-sized cakes being cooked. Each of the discs was packaged with one of the cakes from the recording session sealed in a plastic wrapper. The Sonic Catering Band are, notably, strictly vegetarian.
