Slychosis is primarily the musical brainchild of Gregg Johns who is the primary composer, lead guitar, keyboards and vocals.
Slychosis began as a recording project and has released 4 albums - Slychosis (2006), Slychedelia (2008), Mental Hygiene (2010), and Fractured Eye (2012). The group have begun performing live with 3 new members and 2 Slychotic Alumni. Current additional members include - James Walker on bass and bass pedals (Slychosis alumnus appearing on Slychosis and Slychedelia); Ceci Whitehurst on vocals, acoustic guitar and keyboards (Slychosis alumnus on Slychedelia and Mental Hygiene); Martha Murray-Johns on primary keyboards; Jimbo Richardson on drums and percussion; and Tony White on lead vocals and guitar. The music of Slychosis combines elements of classic prog, neo-prog, psychedelia, and progressive metal. Listeners have likened the sounds of Slychosis to Genesis, Pink Floyd, Rush, Alan Parsons, IQ, Pallas, ELP, Styx, Camel, Marillion, and Van Der Graaf Generator, to name a few. Prior members have included : Todd Sears on drums and vocals, Jeremy Mitchell on drums, Bridget Shield on vocals, Chip Griffith on saxophone, Clay Pell on bass, Shannon Goree on drums, and Mike Fortenberry on trumpet. Guests have included Jeff Hamel (Majestic) and Bones Joshua Theriot (Abigail's Ghost).
An integral part of Slychosis (since the Slychedelia album) is Vladimir Moldavsky, Ukrainian surreal artist extraordinaire. Vlad's visual representations of and creative input to the music of Slychosis make him a true member of the band. A musician in his own right, Vlad has the unique vision and talent to combine elements of drawn, painted, photographed, and digitally generated images into a unique visual experience.
Other projects of note include Johns's collaboration with Jeff Hamel (Majestic) on Proximal Distance. This project is truly a 21st century experience as Johns and Hamel have never set foot in the same room, but have used digital recording and internet technology to co-write and collaborate on Proximal Distance and guesting on each other's projects (Majestic and Slychosis). Johns and Hamel were fans of each other's music and thought it would be fun to collaborate. Their contributions are so congruent in vision and style, it is often difficult to distinguish who is playing which guitar or keyboard part in specific sections. Please check out Proximal Distance and Majestic's fantastic discography. Proximal Distance II is well under way and should be released in the not too distant future!
Also, Ceci Whitehurst has released her first solo album produced and engineered by Johns and features members of Slychosis and friends as contributing musicians to Ceci's wonderful compositions. One reviewer described Ceci's music as "New Wave Folk Rock." Her album, Neapolitan Blues, includes classic folk, rock, pop, and R&B elements. You have to check out Neapolitan Blues!!!
