How can 3 guys make an awesome sound on stage with just one guitar, drums, bass andvocals? We only need to say the words Muse,Primus, Nirvana, Hendrix (the list goes on) to know it’s been done many timesbefore in many different ways.

Yanai Morris made a small name for himself as a key force in eclectic local band Boat earlier this century with their two notable albums, Under Fortune’s Wheel and Whispersin the Waiting Room (which are still played occasionally by public radio DJs). Pear Tongue’s sound is based around hisunique songs and inventive guitar playing but takes these further into ‘altrock’ territory than before. Drummer Michael Ashdown brings his jazz training and a multitude of other influences to his innovative drumming style while Rob Koning lays down solid, interesting bass lines reminiscent of some of The Cure’s work. And like Simon Gallup, probably his biggest influence, Rob’s bass lines either play a subtle role or else stand out as attention grabbers in their own right.
