Renaud PENANT was born in 1959 in Caen, Normandy, France.
He moved to Bordeaux, in the south of France, with two friends (Emmanuel BEX and Jean-Philippe VIRET), and their trio eventually won the 1978"Jazz Aquitaine" competition and toured the region.

He moved to Paris

in 1980, studied drums at the Kenny Clarke-Dante Agostini Drum School

and percussion in the conservatories of Bagnolet and Rueil-Malmaison, and obtained a unanimous first-prize at the Seine Saint-Denis drums competition. He also attended workshops under the direction of great drummers such as Max ROACH, Clifford JARVIS and Jack DeJOHNETTE.

He performed in virtually in every major jazz clubin Paris (New Morning, Duc des Lombards

, Sunset, Petit Opportun,Manhattan Jazz Club, Sunset), in various Jazz Festivals and also played in Germany

and Italy

.

He also started teaching regularly in fourconservatories (Arcueil, le Pré-St-Gervais, Epinay Sous Sénart and Chevilly)until he moved to New York

.

He recorded a CD in 1990 (including twoof his compositions) with Jacques FERRANDEZ’s group "Mille Sabords"entitled "Paris

jour et nuit", which features as a guest thesaxophonist François JEANNEAU, ex-director of the French ONJ (National JazzOrchestra).

He also composed music for television,theater ("Olym-Piaf" dedicated to the great French singer EdithPiaf), and for the CFDT (the largest worker's union in France

).

After studying with Jimmy COBB in 1992during a visit to the United States

, he decided to move to New York

. He finally was able to do so in 2000,and has been living here since then.

He has studied in the States with Joe CHAMBERS,Charli PERSIP, Joe STRASSER and Joe FARNSWORTH.

He has performed with musicians like Bob CRANSHAW,Joe MAGNARELLI, Grant STEWART, John WEBBER, BobbyPORCELLI, Warren VACHE, Frank LACY, Tad SHULL, Mike MULLINS, Spike WILNER, SachaPERRY, Dan NIMMER, Zaid NASSER, Jerry WELDON, John FARNSWORTH, Adam SCONE, SelenoCLARKE . . .

For two years he played for theSaturday Jam Session at Smalls with the John MERRILL Trio, and his regularengagements have included weekly gigs at Smoke with the John WEBBER Organ Trio,and then with his trio featuring Steve ASH

and Mike KARN.

He has played for more than twelveyears every Sunday at the Harlem Col. Charles Young American Legion Post 398with the Seleno CLARKE Organ Trio.

In 2000 he recorded a CD with theJanice FRIEDMAN Trio.

He recorded and performed at Smoke withthe Joe FARNSWORTH World Rhythm Octet which featured musicians such as CurtisFULLER, Ray MANTILLA, Steve NELSON, Jim ROTONDI, Eric ALEXANDER, DavidHAZELTINE, Abdou M’BOUP, and Nat REEVES.

He also performed atSmalls in March 2006 with the Chris BYARS’ Lucky THOMPSON Tribute project in aquartet setting that included the great John HICKS on piano and Ari ROLAND onbass.

In 2007 he played twice at Smoke withhis new quintet featuring the great Bobby PORCELLI on saxophone, John BAILEY ontrumpet, Steve ASH

on piano and Mike KARN on bass. He also toured France

in the fall, playing notably withFabien MARY on trumpet and the great Alain JEAN-MARIE on piano.

In 2007 and 2008 he played with thesinger Ella “Peaches” GARRETT for a series of concerts sponsored by the JazzFoundation of America.

In 2008, he played for variousfunctions at Rutgers

University

in New Jersey

with the Ryan OLIVER Quintet. Hesubbed in New York

for the great drummer Fukushi TAINAKA while he was touringin Japan

, played at Smoke with his Quartet(Fabien MARY on trumpet, David HAZELTINE on piano and John WEBBER on bass), anddid another tour in France

in October.

In 2009, he started playing everySaturday and Sunday for the Jazz Brunch at Smoke with his trio, featuring SteveASH on piano and Chris HANEY on bass. There is a live recording of the triocalled: “I Want To Be Happy”. He also performed with various bands at Smalls,and once again toured in France

, mostly with the David SAUZAY Quartetand the Xavier RICHARDEAU Quintet. He also celebrated his 50thbirthday at Smoke with his trio and the great trumpeter Joe MAGNARELLI as aspecial guest.

In 2010, he continues playing at Smokeweekly and performs regularly with the Marc DEVINE Trio featuring bassist PaulSIKIVIE. He also starts a weekly engagement with French trumpeter Fabien MARYat Cafe Lalo. In August he performs and records live at Smoke with the Renaud PENANTQuintet featuring Bobby PORCELLI. In October he is back in France

, playing this time with the BobbyPORCELLI New York Quartet, featuring Ray MACCHIAROLA and Chris HANEY.

In 2011, he plays regularly at Juleswith such piano players as Steve ASH, Larry HAM, Tadataka UNNO, Marc DEVINE, RobSCHNEIDERMAN, Ray Gallon, guitarists Ray MACCHIAROLA, Kris KAISER, MattCHERTKOFF and bassists Lee HUDSON, TAL RONEN, Chris HANEY and the great HassanSHAKUR. He is also hired for various functions at Columbia

University. He still performs weekly at Café Lalowith saxophonists Alex HOFFMAN, Will and PETE ANDERSON, Chris BYARS andbassists Tal RONEN and Clovis NICOLAS. During his visit in France

he plays with various French musiciansand also New York

saxophonist Dmitry Baevsky. He closes the year at CaféLalo with visiting Italian talents Luigi and Pasquale GRASSO and French bassistMathias ALAMANE.

In 2012 he keeps his regular scheduleand starts playing more regularly with pianists Cecilia COLEMAN and Marc DEVINEas well as bassists Clovis NICOLAS and Paul SIKIVIE. He also feels blessed andhonored to have the opportunity to play a few sessions with saxophone legendFrank WESS at his house.
