THE OVERLORDS: PURE FACTS
It all started with suicide. One night in the spring of 1987 Dick and Sergei (whose true identities hadn't been revealed to them yet) saw avant-garde artists Alan Vega and Martin Rev perform the "concert that changed our lives". And on that night they decided that the Music Biz had entered the space age. No longer should Rock-lobster dominate the planet. The Techno-prawn was born!
The two decided to team up with young, but experienced synth wizard, Ian and the trio formed The Overlords Corporation after a summer of intense research and meditation.
In the autumn of 1987 the band The Overlords emerged on the Scandinavian music scene. Dressed in American football costumes and with a demo tape of hard technorock and radio commercials they blasted their way into the offices of Mega Records, who in return had to give these guys a recording deal. The following 12", "The 7 Year Hitch" captivated the hardness of the style and the next 12", "Night Fever" (a hilarious cover version of the '78 Bee Gees track) soon became a classic.
Blasting their way into the spotlights and headlines, The Overlords made history when they appeared on Danish national television on the Nine o'Clock News saying: "We steal everything from anybody else!!".
While this being far from the case it gave The Overlords a reputation as the "wildest band ever to come out of Scandinavia" and consequently every newspaper and magazine tried to see through them.
Deciding to show the multitude of the concept, The Overlords embarked on their first album project in the spring of 1988. Within three weeks a complete backing tape for Norwegian pop-artist Jørgen Slips was made and the album went straight to the Norwegian top ten. Since the album didn't really have a title The Overlords have named it "Midnight at The Grooveyard".
This in return inspired the band to finish their own LP "Midnight at the Grooveyard II".
Drawing from techno, symphonic rock and avant-garde and with an image inspired by cartoons, horror movies and religion, Midnight at the Grooveyard II is a truly remarkable record.
Midnight at the Grooveyard II was released in June 1988. And shortly after the band played their first live performance at Scandinavia’s biggest festival, the Roskilde Festival and blew everybody’s brains out with a grotesque show of huge dimensions.
The band had now reached a point where Mega Records decided they could no longer follow, they had to let the band go. But it was a friendly split that restored The Overlords full control.
Most of 1989 was spent touring Europe, visiting Goa and most important of all building The Overlords' own production studio and world headquarters: The Grooveyard, beautifully situated in the center of Copenhagen.
With this vehicle, new tracks and concepts were made. Books, tapes and pamphlets were produced and during a gig in Amsterdam, The Overlords signed with Belgian record company Antler Records.
The following 12", "Moontrap" (released spring 1990) with following video showed The Overlords' new style. More electronic, danceable and inspired by the EuroTechno scene, this record started waves in DJ circles.
In 1990 The Overlords recorded all the tracks for the album "Organic?" which was completed in February 1991.
This third album is much different from the others. "Organic?" is harder, deeper and with less crazy jokes than the previous albums, showing that the world had indeed changed in the four years that had passed since the formation of the project. Terminators and Virtual Reality were now a part of peoples daily life and therefore not sensational in themselves.
The Overlords decided to deal with these facts by becoming masters of the machines - Blade Runners, thus saving themselves and their fans from technological repression. And as true friends of mankind The Overlords entered into the electronic network of Mother, the heart of The Grooveyard and dug out several hard-hitting tracks.
After finishing the album, The Overlords looked around to find the person that could transform their ideas of concept and constant change into the more rigid world of dance music.
The choice of Kenneth Baker for the next 12" was not hard. He had the same obsession as the Boys with submerging himself into the underground scene to find new and exciting trends to absorb. And of course it also helped that he had an intrusive personality, so there was no way that Señor Baker could be avoided.
Sundown, an instrumental track from the album was chosen for the next release and after four months of hard work a new musical mutant had been born.
Everywhere played, "Sundown" was a hit.
It got The Overlords contracts with Zyx Records in Germany, Mute Records in France, Caroline in U.S.A., Coma Records in Scandinavia and more. "Sundown" has appeared on many dance compilations and has sold well over 200.000 copies! No progressive dance floor in the world didn't play "Sundown" in '91/'92 and the record could even be found in Japan, one of The Overlords' "true signs of success"!!
The end of 1991 saw the release of the "Organic?" album to excellent reviews and The Overlords continued their quest by selecting the title track "Organic!" for remixing.
The Overlords were fascinated by the new German sound and the energy that the German underground scene had for creating exciting records, graphics and concepts. It was delirious.... it was avant-garde in it's purest form. They chose floor filler and hard liner Sven Väth for this task. Known as the owner and master of the Eye-Q and Hardfloor labels, The Omen and the Cocoon club.
The Overlords is about moving on and developing one's skills. So as always, "Organic+" was produced in close collaboration with the Band. And the Band experienced for the second time that persons without any music skills can create music just out of their willpower (the was before DJ Software!).
A Golden Ear and a Ring in his Nose meant more to our music development than Mozart ever did. Punk never dies......
The music biz' needs faces so there is a need for music videos. The Overlords was asked to make a video for the "Organic?" track and the band teamed up with upcoming photographer Pierre Winther. The "Organic!" video was shot around the salt lakes of Ibiza and is bound to captivate your eyes.
Apart from the ever threatening "retirement to the Himalayas", The Overlords are always on the move.
"Never remain indifferent and never run for cover!" are keywords of The Overlords. Awareness and fantasy are things that are inextricably bound to these three guys wherever they roam the universe. They analyze, they compute, they generate and new data always turns out to be something else than you expected.
With this unpredictability factor in mind The Overlords turned onto a more spiritual wagon. The funky groove is under your hair and world traveling is more fun than fall asleep in front of the drug of the nation. The Overlords went back to India and found the promised land in Africa. Actually....they turned on to tribal beats and Third World thinking!
And out there they generated in their 3-D digital mind the concept for their fourth album with the nudist title of the year: "All The Naked People"
Working on demos for the new album, The Overlords were looking for a new Record deal and decided to use their remix expertise to get noticed on the international music industry scene. The Guys aimed for a major deal because in their heads they had a major story to tell.
And they went straight for the big, fat stock. Through good friends, their endeavours and the Fire God, The Overlords succeeded in getting remix jobs for Blue Pearl & Billy Idol. Both releases entered the official charts in U.K. and US. And to boot, The Overlords earned themselves a Gold Record for their work on the Dr. Baker single "Turn Up the Music", which became a #1 hit in Scandinavia and one of the best selling singles in Denmark. The Boys worked hard (like slaves to the rhythm) and at last one of the lions woke up and went straight for the pray: six months after operation "Don't Eat More Than You Can Swallow", The Overlords was signed to the Habaña/BMG label.
Like in all good fairy tales, The Overlords got their princess and a lot of hard work. But they've promised her live tours and new releases so when The Overlords take down the "Gone Fishing"- sign, watch out!!!!
