For over 20 years, Neil Kull has worked in numerous nightclub/nightlife venues, developing award-winning multimedia presentations and performing lightshows for a variety of artists.
Using color theory, music theory & a uniquely "modular" programming technique, Neil's performances and designs have effectively & efficiently enhanced a wide range of music genres, including house, hip/hop, funk, rock, country, jazz, and more. Working with a variety of event planners & technicians, Neil has created procedures for communication & development among several companies' entertainment technological departments, resulting in well-developed presentations for corporate events, live performances, and nightclubs. Always professional, entertaining & inspiring, Neil Kull delivers solid, versatile & exciting results on-time & under budget.
A Chicago native, Neil began his artistic journey as a cellist at 8 years old. His mother gave him a 35mm camera as a child, & also exposed him to opera & musical theater, which led to both of them becoming involved in local independent theater (her as a performer, him as "that little kid helping everyone find their props & costumes backstage"). In high school, Neil was fortunate to enroll in 2 years of broadcast radio and video production which led to an internship at a local cable access station where he produced his first short film, "Onion Skin." Discovering new techniques in editing inspired him to create a series of innovative music videos, two of which won awards at The Hometown Festival - a ceremony honoring achievements in local access television stations in the Midwest.
Responding to an advertisement in the Chicago Tribune, Neil submitted his 60-minute music video compilation reel - appropriately named "Progressions" - to The Dome Room, a popular industrial nightclub in the center of Chicago's downtown entertainment district. Within a week, he was hired by the venue to produce abstract video content. At the same time, he began to DJ professionally in Joliet, IL. in a small local underground club named "Club 911" where he re-designed the music, lighting, video, & marketing formats to enormous success until his obligations to Chicago required him to turn his attention to the city full-time.
Shortly thereafter, Neil was offered the chance to "fill in" for the resident lighting director at The Dome Room for 6 weeks, where he discovered a genuine love of the artistic possibilities offered by lighting technology. Within 2 weeks, he was approached by the technical director for Kaboom! nightclub, where he was encouraged and allowed to grow as a lighting programmer/operator. Within 6 months, he was brought over to their sister venue - the legendary Crobar nightclub - where his skill set expanded over the next several years to include lighting design & MIDI programming as a means of visual control.
In late 2001, Neil relocated to Las Vegas & programmed the original Light Nightclub in the Bellagio Casino Hotel, & occasionally filled in for their resident lighting operators during their annual vacations. At the same time, several friends (also recently transplanted from Chicago) invited Neil to partner up & create a series of travel-based websites with friends - including an early version of nightclubs.com - that allowed Neil to develop web design skills & work with digital photography for 4 years. After a time, his desire to work in nightlife full-time began to take hold once more, which became a reality in early 2006 when The Light Group opened Jet in The Mirage Casino Hotel - a venue Neil described as "phenomenal" due to the then-new integration possibilities of combining both lighting & video into a MIDI control system. Within a few short weeks, Neil had re-arranged several small portions of the lighting system for a more balanced look, programmed all 3 rooms of the venue, & helped Jet win an award for best new club.
Following the success of Jet, The Light Group promoted him to Lighting Director where he operated, recruited, trained & programmed all their venues as the company expanded rapidly. Every year brought something new: starting with The Bank at Bellagio (the original location of Light), Gold Lounge & Haze Nightclub at Aria (where he won another award, this time for Multimedia Giant from Seven Magazine), Revolution Lounge & 1-OAK at the Mirage (where Neil had a hand in designing the new dancefloor lighting system, in addition to receiving an award in 2012 as one of the Top 75 Most Influential People In Las Vegas), Eclipse/Daylight pool, & the rebirth of Light Nightclub at the Mandalay Bay Casino Hotel, where he was honored to work with artists from Moment Factory & Cirque Du Soliel until his departure to co-found a production design studio in February, 2014.
Lately, Neil's work focuses on nightclub lighting design & consultation, assisting venues worldwide in the development of visual art technology. His most recent work was seen in LEX Nightclub at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV where he delighted in working with local artists to enhance the visual entertainment of the stunning 25,000 sq' venue - which features an indoor pool & some of the world's most renown DJs.
In addition, Neil is constantly exploring new design techniques, producing video & photographic art, recording dance mix compilations & working with various artists on numerous projects, all with the intended goal of developing new & exciting worlds for people to enjoy.
