Myrtle Wilson is represented my MySpace because when she was alive, she was described as very full of life, and at its’ height, MySpace was the largest social networking site in the world.
Today, MySpace is considered “old-fashion.” This is accurate, because Myrtle lived in the Valley of Ashes, which is a very dull place in comparison to East Egg and West Egg. Her status is very low, which is similar to that of MySpace. Additionally, MySpace is often overshadowed by other social networking sites, such as Instagram or Twitter, which represent Gatsby and Daisy. This is accurate in The Great Gatsby as well. Myrtle is in the background and everyone knows that her social status is low. She is represented by the color gray because she lived in the Valley of Ashes, which lacked spirit and was very drowsy. She was upset with her life, because of her lifeless husband. In addition, Myrtle’s life was short lived, which is similar to MySpace.

At dinner Jordan states, “Tom’s got some woman in New York…She might have the decency not to telephone him at dinner time” (15). The way that Jordan talks about Myrtle, shows that they view Myrtle in a negative manner. By calling Myrtle “some woman,” it shows that they do not have respect for her. Everyone else sees her solely as a mistress and not as an actual person.
