In the beginning,I started playing the guitar at the age of 6 in a northern Oklahoma town called Tonkawa, Oklahoma. This was, also, where Northern Oklahoma College is. I guess, Dad had a grand plan for me to learn to play the guitar.Iinitially, I knew I didn't want to play. But, after going to the first lesson. I was reading music and learned my very first song and I fell in love, Walking home carrying my acoustic guitar, I was so proud. I felt special. That relationship with a guitar and music, has now lasted, so far 55 years. Never at one time,I didn't I ever quit playing for any time of period.
I started playing the guitar with formal training by reading music and learning music theory. My teacher's name was Miss White, I think, but don't quote me.She, also taught, piano, too. In those days. It costed one dollar an hour. Much, much less than what could be $20 an hour, nowadays.
It was ,also, with her that I started performing live in front of people. She would take her best students to play recitals for different groups, such,as church, women's groups and senior retirement homes.
After a few years of reading music, I suppose in line with dad's grand plan. I had a new teacher named Chuck Smith teaching me Rock n' Roll. I grew up musically with Chuck,He introduced to me to add in my thumb along with my other fingers to play. Even today I don't see many guitarist that plays with their thumbs, in chords and leads That same year I started playing in the annual local talent show in town at the Northern Oklahoma College in front of huge crowds. I loved it. It was fun. Also at this time. I played for my 5th grade class. In the sixth grade, I put on a more elaborate show. One of my best friends played the guitar, too. I was the better player, but I wanted the class to know what song we were playing, so I let him play lead and I played rhythm. We played Secret Agent Man by Johnny Rivers. We, also had signs and two dancing girls. I think the music teacher was amused and The class liked it.Moving on, In the 8th grade in 68, I was back to reading music by learning the flute in my band class in junior high school. I went to band mainly to learn to play the sax, but their were no extra sax, so, the band director handed me a flute, because the fingering were similar to the sax. There were about 10 or 11 other flutist. I did pretty good, even though I didn't practice it at home very much. Embarassed. I didn't want to be caught carrying a flute home. lol.
Still yet, I was good enough to sit at second chair for the school year.
I, also the same year, I started making money by playing guitar in several bands at parties and other get togethers. Also as an eighth grader our band at that time played at the local dance venue where the Juniors and Seniors hung out on Friday and Saturday nites. It was called the Red Baron. It was pretty cool, being an eighth grader and the Juniors and Seniors loved the music. They were all up and dancing. A few years later at 15, I started playing at bars and nite clubs. musically, I was growing up more. and people were starting to notice my guitar playing. The good thing about the bars. We got paid pretty good and even though we were under age, especially me at 15. We worked in the deal to get free pitchers of beer for our band and everyone else that sat at our table and I thought getting female attention was pretty cool, too. We had notes we had wrote up in the cash register, Just in case, a Sheriff or a deputy walked in and asked the owner about us. being underaged band players. That was fun and the beginning of playing many different venues through the years, Also at that time, knowing music theory, pretty well. I taught myself to play the Piano, Bass, Drums and to sing starting first with backup harmonies, then eventually to singing lead along with the backup harmonies. On the CD's here I don't have the vocals on the songs. What's recorded. It was for me to evaluate what I had of these songs so far. Unfortunally. I had a health problem that's kept me away from putting the vocals on. The CD's here are the beginning of 22 songs, so far that I've wrote and still yet, needs to be recorded. Hope y'all enjoy the Music. and Thanks! for listening.
