Moonlight Agony was founded in Kungsbacka, Sweden and their early years (beginning in 1999) were fraught with ever-changing band names and personnel, yet their music already dabbled in the progressive power metal that would characterize future albums, as evidenced by a trio of 2001 and 2002 demos.
By the time the group released its debut album, Echoes of a Nightmare, in 2004, its lineup consisted of guitarists Kalle Landin and Rickard Petersson, keyboardist Martin Mellström, drummer Robert Willstedt, bassist Christofer Starnefalk, and Sri Lankan-born vocalist Chity Somapala, but this too wouldn't last long. Come 2007's sophomore Silent Waters LP, the latter pair had departed and been replaced by vocalist David Akesson and bassist Christer Pedersen; but the range and complexity of Moonlight Agony's songwriting remained equally ambitious, despite still owing evident debt to bands like Dream Theater and Symphony X. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
