Michael Mordecai is a Texas freelance trombone player.
He has recorded and performed with Willie Nelson, Carole King, Maynard Ferguson, Aretha Franklin, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Band, Manhattan Transfer, Ray Charles, and many more.
BACKGROUND
Mordecai was born in Denton, Texas and while still in high school played with the North Texas Lab Bands . When the NTSU jazz program added a second summer lab band in 1966, One O’Clock Lab Band director Leon Breeden was short one trombone and recruited Mordecai from the high school band to fill out the section. Breeden allowed Mordecai to continue to play in the lab band program and upon high school graduation offered Mike a full music scholarship . Mordecai passed on the music scholarship and chose to major in business at the University of Texas in Austin.
MUSICAL INFLUENCES
Mordecai had grown up playing in bands with many of the great NTSU musicians (Tom “Bones” Malone, “Blue” Lew Marini, Sal Marquez) who went on to play with the Tonight Show, Saturday Night Live, David Letterman and star in the Blues Brothers movie. He had been drawn to the sounds of JJ Johnson, Urbie Green, and Bill Watrous. While at UT, Mordecai won best trombone soloist at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival and later was asked to join the horn section of a rock & roll band called Zilker Sunday playing covers of Blood,Sweat & Tears and Chicago (Jim Pankow became another strong musical influence).
THE BUSINESS
With his business background, Mordecai soon became the leader of the rock band and began booking and promoting other bands as well. He now offices at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Recording Studio and owns BBA/Management & Booking and is the musician/contractor for Bass Concert Hall, Paramount Theater, Austin City Limits, etc. He also owns Fable Records and has produced several albums.
He has served as State President of the Texas Music Association, the Austin Federation of Musicians Board of Directors, the Austin Music Commission and now serves on the board of directors of the National Association of Recording Arts &Sciences (Grammy).
He has appeared both a guest artist and a guest speaker for several colleges in Texas including the University of Texas, Texas Tech, Southwest Texas, and North Texas State University. He has taught music business courses and seminars at Austin Community College, Southwest Texas University, and the Dallas Sound Lab.
