b. Michael Anthony Carr, 7 December 1937, South Shields, Co.
Durham, England. The brother of trumpet player Ian Carr, Mike taught himself the organ, piano, and vibes, and gained a reputation in the Newcastle-based EmCee Five. By the late 60s, he was running a trio that included John McLaughlin and accompanied distinguished visiting musicians. He toured with Ronnie Scott’s group between 1971 and 1975, appearing with them at Carnegie Hall in 1974. Since then his own quartet has toured Europe, and he has established Cargo - a jazz rock group who recorded a successful album in 1985. The Mike Carr Trio continues to appear around the country, playing a hard-swinging, dynamic music rooted in bebop.
