Born in Cuba, composer and pianist Miguel Romero relocated to New York City at the age of ten, where he subsequently studied at the Jazz Mobile in Harlem with such greats as Max Roach, Freddie Waits, and Sonny Redd.
In addition to his piano playing, Romero has written and produced music for dance artist Jocelyn Brown, as well as the hit dance single "Wake It Up" for Michelle Weeks. Now based in Atlanta, Romero leads a five-piece band that plays out regularly (as well as appearing at the Atlanta Jazz Festival and being featured in the 2000 Gainesville Georgia Jazz Series), and has taught clinics at Georgia State and Clark Atlanta University. Thus far, Romero has issued a pair of solo releases, Island Breeze and Cuban Jazz Funk, in addition to numerous appearances on other artists' recordings -- resulting in Romero being voted as one of the Top 15 Independent and Budding Artists of 1999 by Fred Scott of Contemporaryjazz.com and Plan 9 Stores. ~ Greg Prato
