Matt; a saxophonist/flutist and founder of Matt and Phred’s Jazz Club has been one of the main driving forces in jazz and live music over the last 20 years in the North West England.
Matt is noted for his full sound on tenor and a flowing melodic playing style. Matt also plays flute which he now plays in the flamenco band “Calaita flamenco son” Whose album was released on World Music Network’s Riverboat Records Label in April 2014.

Starting playing at the age of 13 Matt learnt his craft on the streets busking in his teenage years and also running and promoting bands from the age of 15. A notable session player with many bands Matt was a member of cult Acid-Jazz Band Chapter and the Verse, No1 Rave band E-Lustrious and legendary DJs, The Jam MCs. His tireless promotion of jazz in Manchester and the North of England lead to the foundation of, Matt and Phred’s Jazz Club and Iroko records and the Manchester Jazz Festival.

The Matt Nickson Qaurtet has been a constant on the scene for over 20 years with some amazing musicians coming through the band including (to name a few) Piano players, Mads Heide, Mike Gorman, John Ellis, Jonathan Gee, Guitarist Stuart MaCallum, Bass players:Michael Cretu Jon Thorne, Frank Grime, Nick Blacker and drummers including Danny “Moody Manc” Ward Mikey Wilson and Luke Flowers.
