My name is Matt Rutherford and I am a photographer and a graphic designer.
These two mediums have served as an extension of my hands and eyes, which I use to capture thoughts. Being able to capture moments on film or help a budding company find its identity through a new logo makes me feel accomplished and in some ways like a creative guide; a guide who reveals a path through expression and persuades you to view something in a different light.
My passion in photography is urban decay. I am attracted to the texture of rust, light pouring in from broken windows, and the air of modern ruins. My graphic design work is always 2-D and made mostly from geometric shapes, often looking like something made delicately from paper.
Gray is my favorite color. It is versatile, complex, and balanced--qualities that I exude in my work.
When I work with my chosen tools I am reminded of everything my professors taught me, about taking pride in my work, being patient with it, and moving past mistakes. I begin a piece by writing down an idea and then finding a piece of music that feels right for conveying the desired mood. I like to concentrate on the words and sounds in the song and then either I create a design or wait until I get an opportunity for to snap a photograph.
I know a piece is done when it all the elements come together, in the way that a puzzle does.
I was formally educated at Brevard College. I studied journalism, photography, graphic design, and typography. For awhile, I lived in London and worked for Business Traveller magazine, learning the trade and getting experience in various skills. Shortly after writing a book about my time there, I moved to the New York City Metro Area. Here, I remain an artist and continue to thrive and seek new inspiration.
