In a sport where ninety-eight percent of the participants are Caucasian, Marcus Wiley, 30 year old Californian has strived to make his name recognized by his fellow competitors.
Marcus is a African American whom has competed in many different forms of professional racing and will continue to make his mark in the world of motorsports. Marcus lives by the motto of “No Room for Mistakes”; he exudes that through his racing by training to improve on his skill and placing first in the majority of his races. Marcus Wiley was born in the tough streets of San Bernardino, CA. He grew up with supportive parents who kept him focused on his studies and future goals. Marcus visualized himself racing at the young age of four. As he became older he obtained more than one job in order to support his dream of racing because his parents couldn’t afford to provide for his education and dreams of racing at the same time. In 2003, Marcus experienced many firsts to start his racing career. In his first racing car, a Honda civic, Marcus placed first in his first drag race. The adrenaline from that race lit a fire inside Marcus and gave him the momentum to partake in additional competitions. Marcus kept his passion for racing but knew receiving his education was valuable to his parents and himself. As a graduate from Riverside Community College with a degree in Automotive Technology and Business Marketing, he got first job out of college as mechanic for the U.S. Border patrol. With ramped lay off’s Marcus found himself losing his focus on racing. After leaving the Border patrol he submerged himself into his dream. In 2005 he placed first at Import Invasion Drag Racing Championship in Pomona, CA with a time of 9.824 seconds. Next, in 2006 he placed second in the Rally Mexico Championship, 1:09.10 seconds. In 2007, Marcus won the Freestyle Rally Championship in Barstow, CA with a time of 1:15.02. His ambition and drive excelled over the years and placed Marcus at the top of his game. In 2008 he won first place in Japan at the Pro-AM Drift Championship. Marcus has a purpose of action; it is to bring more minority awareness to the sport of auto racing. When asked where he foresees himself in the future, Marcus says “I will become a BITD and Score International Champion”. He dreams big and will do whatever it takes to make it happen. Marcus Wiley is just the common man who aims his attention at the things he wants. His goal is to make a permanent mark in history but he will never forget his racing idols who paved the way to make it possible; Willy T. Ribbs, Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Ivan " Ironman" Stewart and the Earnhardt’s. Marcus started his racing career only ten years ago, it seems short but he does not see it coming to an end anytime soon.
