By taking their name from one of Sumo Wrestling's heavyweight divisions, New Jersey's Maegashira were making obvious reference to the Southern sludge and doom metal influences pervading their music, but not necessarily the epic post-metal tendencies that occasionally brought interesting dynamic contrasts into the picture.
Formed circa 2005 by vocalist JJ Koczan, guitarist George Pierro, bassist John Eager, and drummer Steve Moraghan, Maegashira cut their teeth on local stages while releasing a pair of demos: 2006's The Inner Workings of Block Time and 2007's The 1,209,600 Seconds Sessions. These brought them to the attention of Connecticut's Spare Change Records, which paired them with producer Lou Gorra (of Halfway to Gone fame) for the recording of their official debut album, The Stark Arctic, released at the start of 2009. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
