Ken Hefner, born Xavion Julian Christopher Niles, was brought into this world on September 27, 1985 during the first hurricane in New York City.
A Harlem native, his parents were divorced at five with his father moving to New Jersey and his mother staying in New York, breaking his family. Living in every borough except for Staten Island, the oldest of three children, Ken found a comfort in the arts as a way to express feelings he couldn't vocalize. With a grandmother who believed he was destined to be a star at the age of six, Xavion was introduced into the world of acting where his love for expressive art would began to develop.
Being cast in commercials, a few music videos, and a movie he suffered the loss of his grandmother which resulted in an irreplaceable void as well as his participation in acting. With his grandmother gone, during his years in elementary school, he was heavily involved in school plays and the choir where he found that he had a talent for singing. A shy individual, Ken was comfortable when eyes were on him as he sang songs from some of his favorite artists at the time, Tevin Campbell, Michael Jackson, and many male R & B groups. It was his time in junior high school that he really used his voice, if only to woo the girls in his class, and it was then he realized what he possessed was not just a voice but, a vocal range.
Tenor dominant, Ken's high school years was where his love for performing began to blossom. Moving to New Jersey at seventeen to live with his father because his mother was suffering from diabetes stirred another innate skill in Ken, poetry. Being away from his mother while she was sick hurt Ken more than anything and a rocky relationship with his father added to the stress of coming into adulthood. Back and forth between New York City and New Jersey to visit her in the hospital, two years after he moved, Ken lost his mother at nineteen.
Though with familial strife, starring in his choir throughout his high school career, Ken's confidence about live performing strengthened through training and encouragement from his favorite teacher, Ms. Arella. Always keeping his mother's fondness of his musical talents with him, his "smooth velvetly" voice would mature after high school. Having written many forms of poetic pieces enabled Ken to channel all of his emotions into a vise he'd soon develop into a completely different expressive art form. He didn't know at the time but he would eventually turn those poems into lyrics and in 2010, "Ken Hefner" was born.
Xavion began to write and record hip hop tracks where he would take the stage name "Ken Hefner", a confident lyricist who appeared to have an aversion to artists like Lil B and Souljah Boy who appeared "lyrically lacking". Proclaiming them "Gameboy" rappers, he recorded and funded his first mixtape "Marvel Superhero", directed to those who wanted to see a different side of the game. Those who knew Xavion but heard Ken for the first time were awed by his transformation from mainly singer to a lyricist. Without a team or manager, Ken debut the standout track "Groupie Love" to DJs in New Jersey which played on many online streaming sites and got DJ Frosty, hitmaker of New Jersey club music to host his mixtape. Ken was able to release his mixtape but with limited finances, proper marketing and promotion he found himself lost in a sea of unsigned artists while his contempt for "tacky" artists grew. His flow still evolving, Ken began to feverishly work on his second effort, another mixtape where he would began to mix both forms of his art and combine the two into one.
"Hustlin My Flow" is Ken's second mixtape also indepentdently funded by him and dropped in January of 2012. Determined to get his voice known, he brought a heavier, grimey street sound to his songs and found himself becoming rather popular amongst a female fanbase and young teenage males. Instead of wanting to be labeled as a "rapper", Ken added some vocals to tracks like "Rock With The Hef", a song about a woman in love with a superstar who turns out to be her bestfriend and "Aint Nobody Better", a track where Ken metaphorically displays why there isn't anybody better than him in his lane. This display of versatility shocked listeners and gained Ken what he wanted. A buzz. Through social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, responses to his new way of flowing were positive.
With a more established demand for his music, the need to blaze a stage and interact personally with his fans, Ken still felt as though he wasn't "armed" enough to truly debut his artistry among other lyricists and singer. Taking a year off from recording, he wrote endlessly with the goal of bettering his delivery and song content for the masses. It wasn't until he met, Evan James a.k.a "Ev J", a producer through a mutual friend that Ken's talents began to truly shine through. After years of recording songs to instrumentals or pre-made beats through venues such as "Soundclick", Ken was able to work with Evan to make his own, original music and sound. This opportunity is what pushed him to finally be at a place lyrically and vocally to put out his first album titled, "Bodies On My Flow', a 13 track LP consisting of different genres of music from hip-hop to house all produced by Evan James that will be leaving "bodies of other artists on his flow, delivery, punchlines, and bars."
As a multi-faceted artist embarking on a journey known to many but only lived by few with a pen in hand and a dream in the other, Ken is armed and ready to take the music industry by storm.
