I am a confessed music nerd.
Back in high school, I was like the kid in Almost Famous. A devout reader of "Circus," "Creem," and "Rolling Stone," I studied musical minutiae and admired Dave Marsh, Lester Bangs, and Greil Marcus almost as much as Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. I even dabbled in rock criticism in college, where I also began performing at the campus coffee house.

While I had been raised on the Beatles, Stones, and Creedence, it was my later discover of Dylan and Springsteen that fueled my desire to create music. Through them I learned that music could be more than just entertainment; it could be an avenue of expression and an agent of change. They also led me to other great artists such as Elvis, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Woody Guthrie.

My style of music is either rock 'n' roll with a twang or country with a rock 'n' roll edge--depending on the audience, the venue, or even just my mood. Many of my favorite songwriters hail from Texas: Buddy, Roy Orbison, Joe Ely, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, Nanci Griffth, and Townes Van Zandt. Other influences include John Hiatt, Nick Lowe, and Tom T. Hall.

I have played in various bands on Long Island since the mid 80's and am a proud member of the New York Roots Music Association (NYRMA). I have also performed in New York venues mostly solo but occasionally with my friend of many years, Jim Mulligan.

I have three CDs, "Every Country Road ... Every City Street," "Departures and Arrivals," and "Geffner Goes Eclectic," all available through CD Baby and iTunes, and an as-yet unreleased CD "Nice Problem to Have." Jim and I have a CD titled "The Musical Stylings of Mugz and Lamar." also available on CD Baby and iTunes.

My wife Linda and I live on Long Island with our two cats Mookie and Ella.
