This is a topic I will likely bring up again and again -- age and beauty and how they overlap. I know I've blogged about the Greek root of the word beauty before, but I love it so much it will probably be a recurring theme in my blog. As most people know, acting is…
The holiday of gratitude is upon us! One of my favorite parts of the holidays is decorating for the holidays! It really is a lot easier to transition from fall decorations to Christmas decorations if you consider Thanksgiving to be a transitional winter holiday -- as in the colder season, not the literal season which…
One of my favorite parts of the holidays is decorating for the holidays! It really is a lot easier to transition from fall decorations to Christmas decorations if you consider Thanksgiving to be a transitional winter holiday — as in the colder season, not the literal season which doesn’t start until around Christmas. Winter decorations can stay up from Thanksgiving through spring, really. They’re meant to fill your house with warmth and cheer during the dark, cold months and usually involve things like berries, nuts, pinecones and evergreen branches … and, of course, warm, cozy, cheerful items and colors.
(Click any picture or link in this post to see the item in store.) I saw a beautiful table in a Michael Amini advertisement for his Bella Cera dining room furniture that inspired this post. I was amazed at how it looked so down-to-earth and elegant at the same time. The solid wood table had…

Making quilts these days is laughably different from the way my grandmother made them. First of all, these days the first step is to "choose your material/fabric." No one in my family ever really did that. The material that made up the quilt came from old, worn out dresses, shirts, tablecloths, scraps leftover from making…
Pottery Barn has bottle lamps that a lot of people are falling in love with. I spotted the first bottle lamp I saw at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store. ... Well, maybe not the first bottle lamp I ever saw in my life, as this is an old DIY idea that often utilizes antique jugs…
I saw a designer ad for a cream and blue-colored dining room with two tall, slender lucite lamps on the buffet and in the middle of the table there were two tall cylindrical flower vases and an even taller deer antler piece. The antler was fitted to a white base and was a sort-of antiqued…
In what ways can the natural beauty of a deer antler fit into a more urban or modern setting? How can we incorporate them into softer, more sophisticated styles?
Why are folk art animals so appealing? Maybe because they are artistic? Or just whimsical? Because they are quirky and quaint and can be one eye-catching accent to a room or a whole theme when put together?

I've seen a lot of these "drinking jars" lately. People have been seeking them for outdoor wedding centerpieces and quirky al fresco parties. They are sometimes labeled as "redneck" or "country" glassware and advertised as something to add "hillbilly fun" to your table or party. There is even a "country stemware" version in which a jar is…
