Some of the notable dates of my life:
1728: Born at Marton (near modern Middlesbrough), Yorkshire, Britain. Click for Map

1736: Family moved a few miles to Great Ayton, Yorkshire. I attended the village school.

1744: I moved several miles to the coastal village of Staithes and became an apprentice to a shop keeper.

1746: Moved south to Whitby, where I worked for Captain John Walker on his ships.

1755: Joined the Royal Navy as an ordinary seaman

1759: Took part in surveying the St. Lawrence River in Canada

1760-67: Surveyed the islands of Newfoundland, St. Pierre and Miquelon off the east coast of Canada

1768-71: First Voyage round the world in the ship Endeavour1770: I claimed the whole of the east coast of Australia for Great Britain on 22 August 1770, naming eastern Australia 'New South Wales'.

1772-75: Second Voyage round the world in the ships Resolution and Adventure

1776-80: Third Voyage round the world in the ships Resolution and Discovery, but couldn't complete the journey.

1779: Passed away in Hawaii
