What happens when two Seattle musicians hit Germany as tourists, meet up with a punk band, and start playing shows all over the continent? Well, that's pretty much the story of how Pothead went from being a late night musical jam project in the Pacific Northwest to a three piece stoner rock band in Germany.
The long story, however, is that guitarist Brad Dope and Jeff Dope had gotten tired of the state of stall going on in their respective bands, so they hot-footed it to Deutschland for a vacation. During their travels outside of Germany, in the Basque country to be exact, Brad and Jeff stumbled across a punk band, the Accused, on tour. Motivated by the DIY ethic of the band, the duo began performing all over the place, starting in Berlin, and by the time their visas expired and a trip home was all but certain, Pothead had played a whopping 45 shows in countries such as Switzerland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and -- obviously -- Germany. The pair returned shortly thereafter -- this time for good -- and found drummer (and final piece of the Pothead puzzle) in the form of Sebastian. The band released a collection of their early work, USA, in 1993, and was quickly followed by their first official album, Rumely Oil Pull, in 1994. A string of further full- length releases followed (Desiccated Soup (1995), Learn to Hypnotize (1997), Fairground (1999), Burning Bridges (2000), Grassroots (2001), Tuf Luv (2003), Live in Berlin (2004), and 2006's Chaudière). ~ Chris True
