Conceived as a genre-hopping indie/hip-hop/electronica project in the vein of the Go-Team and the Avalanches, Michael Siegrist (Avant-Harde) and Jonathan Lawless (Jonny Handshake & the Agreements) put together First Rate People almost immediately out of high school.
The duo progressed quickly and evolved into more of a collective than a band, which included over 30 other young musicians on the Ontario music scene. The meat of the group's recordings circulated around core members Sigrist and Lawless -- along with Linsey Beckett, Jess Kropf, Claire McLeish, Alicia Ross, Liam Sanagan, and Hayden Stewart. In December of 2007, First Rate People released their debut, a lofty concept album titled Let’s Get Nautical, but it wasn’t until 2010 that blogs started picking up on the project, via the Junior Boys-esque single “Girls Night.” The figureheads of the band declined initial label offers due to their aspirations to finish school, but even so, they made plans to complete an EP and tour of Ontario and the States by the end of the year. ~ Jason Lymangrover
