At the age of 4 he and his family moved to Kingston for a time before they then moved to Portmore where he lived for many years. But it was while he lived in St Catherines that as a youth he would sneak out of the house to go and hear sound systems like Syndicate , Stonelove and Love child disco, which is where he met Dj Roy who he considered to be his idol. After hearing Dj Roy play his desire and love for music inspired him to become a dj himself.He would often times sleep outside , because his mother would lock the door and he was locked out, so he then asked his mother permission to go and listen to Stonelove. Gary and his family again packed up and moved this time to a place called Bridgeport where he met Dj Greg on XXX disco who he would go with from time to time and play with.

He was then introduced to Tweety bird who helped him get a chance to play at a night club named “Extreme”, he also played at teen jams along side Scratchy B and Johnny cool from zip Fm in Jamaica. It was then that he took his good friend Raga-z with him to play, who at the time went by the name outlaw. As Icon sound became popular he was given the opprotunity to travel between New york and Jamaica. After the club he played in closed he began to play more often overseas where his reputation began to grow as a dj because he began to play all over, he also did a lot of interviews. At that time he wanted to build his own sound, so while watching TV he saw Janet Jackson and they used the word icon to describe her, that he would start to play under the name Icon Sound. Gary felt that because of his hard work and energy he too had become a Icon . After building his own dub plate, he then did dub plates with Raga-z, Jah Zarro, I Wayne, Zabric, Mr Bertus, Danny B, Marko, Bascom X, baby demus as well as the late” Daddy Vic, Baby Wayne and Marko brand”, which were all instrumental in helping Icon Sound get its start and gain popularity.

He has played in Miami and New York . He migrated to Boston for a short time , but it was after his move to St Louis that his desire to start a radio station was born. It was because he wanted reggae music to have its own station. So he called up his silent partner and asked him about starting a reggae radio station, the two quickly agreed that it was a idea worth putting into action, but they needed a name, so they took the letters of both their sons names Shyeim and Garrick and put them together and so the name Shyrick came to be, they then added dancehall radio to make it sound more professional. Through networking and support for its artist , shyrick has grown world wide. Gary promotes up and coming artist who want to show case their talent.

Most of the artist as well as the god father of reggae Dave West have all done jingles and dub plates, and helped Shyrick build its reputation as one of the leading reggae radio stations online to date.
