With a discography featuring heavy hitters such as Nicki Minaj, LL Cool J and Odd Future favorite Frank Ocean, Dre Knight is establishing himself as a premiere producer for todayʼs top artists.
He may still be a fresh face in the music industry, but Knightʼs extraordinary, natural talents, professionally-trained ear and work ethic all combine to make this emerging producer appear like a seasoned veteran.Growing up, Knight knew he was destined to make music and discovered his natural talents early on. By the time he was just six years old, the New York Native was already a self-taught pianist. He could soon duplicate every key and string that formed Princeʼs “Purple Rain.” After High School, Knight enlisted in the notoriously tough Armed Forces School of Music
where he was professionally trained in the art of conducting, tone, rhythm, theory and performance. You name it; Knight had mastered it and was ready to become a noted composer.
Shortly after his service, Knightʼs first major break came following a chance encounter with late Def Jam exec, Shakir Stewart. “I was a super hungry producer and I was always looking for opportunities,” he recalls.
That opportunity presented itself when Shakir enlisted Knight to create a remix for Teairra Mariʼs hit single, “Make Her Feel Good.” As an eager producer that was willing to prove himself, Knight immediately took on the challenge. “I took the vocals home on a Friday. I worked on it that entire weekend,” remembers Knight.
The result of Knightʼs unwavering ambition was a remix that brought him national attention. After spending the week sleeping in studios and tracking down vocals from Kanye West, Knight was rewarded with a track that also featured Hip-Hop icon, Jay-Z. Backed by both Knightʼs riveting production and its superstar guests, the track quickly became a Hot 97 favorite. From there, Knight was frequently called upon for collaborations with a string of notable artists. Each track further solidified his reputation as a trusted producer.
Much like his idols Stevie Wonder and Prince, Knight is more than just a musician. Knight is a pioneer who embodies deeply-rooted aspirations which go far beyond simply making music. His ultimate goal is to make a lasting impact not just on music, but on popular culture itself. Knightʼs musical versatility, along with his multi-genre background, allows “people from all over the world, and from all different walks of life to connect to
[his] songs.” Although he is yet to hit the apex of his career
, he plans on becoming a name synonymous with captivating production that encompasses all tastes. Regardless of his success, Knight maintains his humility, stating: “To whom much is given, much is required.”
