Desciples is a Denver-based, self-described, “DreadRock” band with an eclectic audience and loyal fans.
Desciples sound is chemically engineered to put your body in motion. Fueled with enough delay to swim in, and a thick percussive section that keeps your head just above water. The groove is heavy, yet spacious, like basking in the sun on a private beach with your own personal bartender. Don’t be surprised when they burst into a rocking White Stripes or Depeche Mode cover. The band is the epitome of the term “DreadRock” as they blend the legendary sounds of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, with Pink Floyd and Nirvana. If Jimi Hendrix, Bradley Nowell, and Bob Marley are hanging out right now, this is what they are playing. In 2005, Stephen Hashbarger was 17, and began his song writing career. He attended an open mic in Englewood, Colorado where he met Chilli and planted the seeds for the roots of Desciples. Fast forward to 2007. In front of a sold out crowd at the Gothic Theater in Englewood, Desciples won the Denver leg of a national Battle of the Bands competition and became 1 of 17 groups remaining. They were honored with an opportunity to play a nationally televised performance at the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame.

Over the next few years, Desciples formed a solid lineup consisting of Stephen Hashbarger, Chilli Moreno, Terry Burns and Tynan Olsen. The summer of 2009, Desciples began recording their debut studio album, “Couch Surfing & Soul Searching”. Due to scheduling conflicts caused by juggling two bands, Tynan left Desciples to pursue other projects. In May 2010, Tim Maholic was recruited to play drums.

On July 10th, 2012, “Couch Surfing & Soul Searching” was released. The album presents a skillfully told, behind-the-scenes view of the success’ and failures of Stephen’s life. From the trials of personal relationships to the angst of growing up to the struggles of balancing the band and his home life, to major events taking place around the world today, “Couch Surfing & Soul Searching” is a journey through the mind of a conflict, compassionate, young man with an old soul. Desciples love for life and humanity is conveyed brilliantly in this compilation of recorded songs.

In 2011, Tynan rejoined Desciples as Tim passed the drumsticks back to Tynan. Between 2012 and 2013, Chilli, Steve, Terry, and Tynan began recording a new album. The second release from the Desciples, “Root Down” became available on CD and ITunes in March of 2013. “Root Down” is a 2-CD, 21 song, ear-tingling, enticing, feet-moving, finger-tapping, thought-provoking litany of songs that DreadRock their way into your heart and soul. Steve is a passionate and honest song-writer and creates lyrics come from the heart and are based in the reality of everyday.

Desciples live performances are pumped with enough one-drop and raw guitar to please a variety of reggae, funk, rock, and blues fans. The music has a little bit of everything for everyone. Desciples provide a perfect balance of originals and covers. Desciples cover songs ranging from the White Stripes to Elton John to the crowd-pleasing “Bowl For Two” by the Expendables. They have played both family- friendly venues and Stripperpalooza, and know how to please the audience they play for. Signature to their stage show is always a call and response moment that gets the crowd amped and involved; and a ripping guitar solo preformed by Steve, with his tongue (a moment that gets the Iphones flashing).

In June 2013, Terry Burns and Tynan left Desciples to reconnect with an old band they played in prior to joining Desciples. Steve picked up a few free agents when local band, Apex Vibe spilt up. Desciples currently consists of Steve on mind-melting guitar and vocals, “Dubs” banging out the beats on the drums, Chilli providing pleasant percussive pandemonium, Sam on the killer keys, and Derek Smith dropping the one on the bass.

Desciples have been playing venues around Denver since 2007, headlining Herman’s Hideaway every few months, opening for several touring bands, and have done a few short road tours. On April 20th, 2013 Desciples opened for Barrington Levy at Casselmen’s Bar and Grill during a High Times sponsored event related to the Cannabis Cup. Most recently they blew the crowd’s collective minds when they opened for Supervillians at the Marquee.
