A real man, with a real voice.
We are talking about Pop, Soul, and R&B singer, David Moni. Mr. Moni has already made waves around the world, having many followers on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and other social media sites. His music has reached the ears of many, and has been received well in many countries, including the U.K.- where his single “Woman Smile” has been hitting the airwaves on TSOL (The Soul of London) radio.
Ever since David was little, he enjoyed listening to and singing along to records played by his parents. When David was a teenager in Los Angeles (his hometown), his musical inspirations ranged from soul artists Sam Cooke, Teddy Pendergrass, Bill Withers, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Luther Vandross to country stars Johnny Cash and Lionel Richie.
“I remember songs like ‘Turn Off The Lights’, ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’, “Use Me”, and ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ — I just remember those songs being so unique-sounding when they came on the radio,” he says. “They had a big impact on me, and they were huge influences, as well as many others when I was growing up.”
“When I was a kid, my mother wanted me to go into acting- but I noticed that all the actors that came into my father’s barber shop were broke, so I decided to pursue a career in real estate and business finance- which actually requires a lot of acting” he laughs.
While a majority of music artists today use auto-tune, and computers on their voice, David believes in the “old school style” of singing- pure, raw vocals. Mr. Moni performed a few songs for me live, and the sound was original, authentic, and real, and sounded just like the CD. I see why artists have nicknamed him, “The Singer”- and I am a fan.
Mr. Moni wears many hats as an artist- he is a singer, a songwriter, and a producer. And, he directs his own music videos. When asked about his new, much-anticipated album, “Love Deeply”, he says: “The songs are in different keys, and I blur the lines between different genres in my music. I do this by combining jazz, soul, pop, country and world music together. These are songs that EVERYONE can relate to- no matter where you come from, or who you are. EVERYONE experiences life, and these songs are just a reflection of it”. He states, “I wrote songs not for the love that I have, but for the woman I will one day have”.
He hopes to one day experience that happiness, speaking of his personal pain and depression nearly 5 years ago.
“Back in 2008, I fell victim to a stress related illness. I had to close my businesses, and my wife at the time, feeling the gravy train was over, decided that she didn’t want to be married anymore. After joking about how the law favors women when it comes to calling the police, I moved into a storage garage. I got the hint.
At some point during my severe depression,
I decided I could either go down, or I could go up. I chose the up. So, I started writing songs, stories, movies, and through the process of writing positively on not the life I had, but the life I wanted. By the action, my spirit was healing.
Music and writing basically saved my life. That’s when I started saving every bit of money for music purposes (top vocal coaches, Yamaha music equipment, Sennheiser microphones, etc).”
Perseverance, and ambition is definitely a word used to describe Mr. Moni. He grew up with a strong work ethic, which carries over into his music. He has worked with the top vocal coaches in the world, the top music producers and musicians in the world, and takes great pride in making the highest quality music for his fans to enjoy.
“Growing up in the Leimert Park area in Los Angeles (the area where Boyz N The Hood was filmed, and near where Ice Cube grew up), I learned to see life from a real point of view from the window of my father’s barbershop on Vernon Street, Starlight Barbershop, to washing cars on my dad’s car lot next to Woody’s BBQ, I’ve always worked hard- even as a kid. I saw the realness of life. But, I wanted to write songs that were always positive. So, when I turned 17, I joined the navy to get out and see the world. By doing that, I gained respect for other people’s cultures.”
David’s experience in the navy inspired him to write one of the songs featured on the Love Deeply album, “It’s Not Easy”. It’s a song dedicated
