Carlos Macedo was born in 1946 inLousado, Vila Nova da Famalicão, on 9 December 1946.
He is asinger, musician, author, composer, as well as a craftsman of thePortuguese guitar.At 17, his love for music led him to form amusical group playing traditional Portuguese music, under his ownname. This led to his first appearance on Portuguese national radio,soon followed by others. He moved to Mozambique to complete hismilitary service, and there participated in a band organized withinthe Army. He remained in Mozambique after completing hismilitary service. By 1972, he was known as "the king of fado inMozambique." His first record included "Guitarra tocabaixinho" ("Guitar, play softly").Followingthe independence of Mozambique from Portuguese rule, he returned toPortugal and recorded "Até o Rei ia ao Fado"--aconsiderable hit that led him to play in various fado houses. In1982, he began a long tenure at Sr. Vinho, a highly regarded Lisbonfado house under the direction of Maria da Fé, where he remaineduntil 2008. During this period, Carlos Macedo toured throughoutPortugal, Europe and South America, accompanying Maria da Fé andalso singing.Macedo recounts a memorable 1984 concert in Riode Janeiro, Brazil, held as part of a program denoted "Bridgingcultures between Brazil and Portugal." One night, Maria da Féasked Carlos Macedo to substitute for her briefly while she changedher costume. He did so--singing three fados--and was very wellreceived by the public. Carlos Macedo speaks fondly of this time,remembering the favorable reception he received from the Brazilianpress and from fellow artists in the country.
By 1991, CarlosMacedo had recorded eight records and accompanied other fadistas oninnumerable other records. He traveled widely, playing in Brazil,Spain, The Netherlands, Canada, Belgium and France. In 1998, heplayed on the first stage at "Expo 98" in Lisbon for oneweek. In 2000, he played with Argentina Santos at the Coliseu deRecreios in Lisbon. Later that year he played at an important concertin Paris, organized under the auspices of UNESCO, with Mariza, Mariada Fé, Jorge Fernando, Cristina Branco, Argentina Santos and HermanJosé. In 2000 he released "Este Meu Fado," on theStrauss label, a record produced by Maria de Lourdes de Carvalho. Itwas presented in 2000 at the Lisbon Fonoteca (6 July), all FNACs,Centro Cultural de Belém (6 March), Casino Póvoa de Varzim (April2001),He followed this period with the recordings "Fado,""Carlos Macedo" and "Desejos".In October2002, he appeared at the Colette Besson Ozoir-la-Ferriére Hall inFrance with the fadista Ana Moura. He was honored in 2006 by Lousado,his home city, by the festival commission of the "Romaria Nova",and remains strongly connected to the city. He was invited by theBishop of Leiria, António Marto, to sing "O Milagre Que Pedi"("The miracle I asked for") and "Ser Peregrino"("To be a pilgrim"), two songs connected to the message ofthe Virgin Mary at Fátima. He sang in October 2007 at the PastoralCenter of Paul VI, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of theappearances of the Virgin Mary at Fátima. He performed on 24 January2009 at the Casa das Artes in Vila Nova da Famaliação. On 22 April2010 he presented "Entre Nós o Fado" at the Fado Museum inLisbon, and again on 26 May 2010 at the Casa das Artes in Vila Novada Famalicão. His work is now distributed by Metro-Som.
He recently wrote the book entitled"Simplesmente Peregrino" ("Simply a Pilgrim"), atestimony of love and faith. According to Carlos Macedo, this book isthe result of a promise: "that I would travel as a pilgrim fromLisbon to Fátima, in thanks to Our Lady of Fátima, if she wouldcure my wife of
the cancer which had brought her so close todeath." Carlos Macedo says, "the miracle has happened, andthe promise has been fulfilled."
The book is edited by Luade Marfim Editora. The book was released on 22 May 2011 at theAuditório of Campo Grande, Lisbon. It was presented at Casa do Povoin Lousado (28 May 2011), 13 July 2011 at Livraria Leya in Lisbon,and at the Feira do Livro in Portimão, as well as on television(RTP, TVI, SIC). The book is currently in its secondprinting.
