Baleen initially started out as an instrumental group comprised of Mike Vagianos (guitar), Brian Wingate (guitar), and Phil Disher (drums).
The three tinkered with elements of jazz, R&B, and electronica for a fresh, sophisticated sound. Personality Plus, released in 2000, captured such ambience, but nothing was set in stone. With a move from their native Chapel Hill, NC, to Charlotte, Baleen added Tony McCullough (horns), Derrick Hines (keyboards), and Steve McMillan (bass) to the fray while Wingate left. Baleen looked ahead for a change in direction. Soundtrack to a Normal Life, which bustled with trippy and dreamy edges, appeared in 2002. ~ MacKenzie Wilson
