It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and co-creator Rob McElhenney has confirmed that he made an unexpected cameo in Game of Thrones’ season eight premiere on Sunday night.

Eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice that McElhenney and Silicon Valley’s Martin Starr appeared during a violent scene which saw Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) as he attempted to rescue his sister Yara (Gemma Whelan) from a ship captained by their uncle Euron (Pilou Asbæk).

Both McElhenney and Starr appeared as two soldiers in the Golden Company, who became injured during the desperate escape. Posting on Instagram, McElhenney confirmed his cameo and showed a gory close up of his face with a severely injured eye.

“Don’t blink. #gameofthrones,” he captioned the snap. He also set the location to the ‘Seven Kingdoms of Westeros’, appropriately.

McElhenney is known for his work with Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss who previously wrote an episode of It’s Always Sunny’s ninth season, and made a brief cameo as a pair of lifeguards in season 12.

The same episode also saw the fate of Ed Sheeran’s cameo character being revealed. The singer made a brief cameo in the first episode of the show’s seventh season in 2017, where he led a singalong among a group of Lannister soldiers and even enjoyed a brief conversation with Arya Stark. 

However, it transpired in Sunday night’s episode that his face had been burnt off.

Meanwhile, McElhenney recently reassured fans that they’ll “still be doing ‘Sunny’ for the foreseeable future“, despite Glenn Howerton’s role being downplayed somewhat.
