Metallica have announced that they will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their classic ‘S&M’ album with a special performance dubbed ‘S&M²’.

Reuniting with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, who accompanied the band on the iconic live album and DVD, the anniversary show will serve as part of the grand opening of the new Chase Centre, a multi-purpose arena in San Francisco that will also be the new home of NBA champions the Golden State Warriors.

James Hatfield and Lars Ulrich joined San Francisco Symphony Orchestra music director Michael Tilson Thomas, along with representatives from the Warriors franchise and San Francisco mayor London Breed, to make the announcement at the Chase Center today.

Please join us for this one-night-only show as we celebrate the addition of what is sure to become a cultural landmark in the Bay Area,” they said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to be invited to be a part of it and humbled to be sharing the stage with the legendary MTT and the city’s finest musicians in the San Francisco Symphony.”

Composed by Michael Kamen, the original ‘S&M’ album was in part a tribute to late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton’s love of classical music. Going on to be certified 5x platinum, ‘S&M’ featured the fan favourite ‘No Leaf Clover’.

Full details on what the performance will entail exactly is yet to be determined. ‘S&M²’ will take place September 6, 2019 and all ticketing info can be found on Metallica’s website.

Fans had to wait five years for 2008’s ‘Death Magnetic’ and eight years for 2016’s ‘Hardwired… To Self-Destruct’ but Trujillo confirmed the metal veterans have already begun “jamming” on new material.
