The 2019 Academy Award nominees were announced Tuesday morning and though The Favourite and Roma walked away with the most nods at 10, plenty of other movies made Oscar history.

Black Panther grabs a Best Picture nomination

Marvel’s Black Panther became the first superhero movie to make it into the Best Picture category 10 years after public outcry over The Dark Knight‘s snub prompted the Academy to expand the list from 5 nominees to a possible 10 every year. The Chadwick Boseman-starrer easily beat the competition to finish as the highest grossing movie of 2018 with $1.3 billion and walked away with 6 other nominations for a total of 7.

Spike Lee’s first nomination as director

Though it seems hard to believe, this is Spike Lee’s first ever nomination in the Best Director category. The BlacKkKlansman director also becomes only the 6th black filmmaker nominated in the category, following Jordan Peele’s nomination last year. Lee was previously nominated for Best Original Screenplay in 1980 for Do the Right Thing and for Best Documentary Feature in 1998 for 4 Little Girls. The Academy gave him an honorary award in 2015.

Lady Gaga first person nominated in lead acting and original song

Although Mary J. Blige beat her to the punch last year when she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song in the same year, Lady Gaga has become the first person ever to get a lead acting nominations as well as original song. The Grammy winner is the favorite to win in the song category with her hit “Shallow” from A Star Is Born.

Netflix’s first Best Picture nomination — and a bunch of others!

Also making history in the Best Picture category is Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma. The Mexican film became Netflix’s first ever nominee in the category, and it also scored firsts for Netflix in Best Director, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

Gabriela Rodriguez first Latin woman nominated for best picture

Following in the trend, Roma also scored a major first when producer Gabriela Rodriguez became the first Latin woman in the Best Picture race. She produced the film along with Cuarón. The movie helped raise the profile for Latinos at the show after only Guillermo del Toro got major nominations at last year’s ceremony. Cuarón, Rodriguez and Roma actresses Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira bring that total up to four this year.

Alfonso Cuarón first person to net best director and cinematographer nominations in same year

The Mexican filmmaker landed four personal nominations for Roma — Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography — which scored 10 total. He missed out on a Best Editing nomination but made history as the first person to earn Best Director and Best Cinematography nominations in the same year for the same movie.
