The force is strong...

John Mayer has outed himself as a huge Star Wars fan by emulating the unusual look of Kylo Ren, and encouraging his fans to do the same.

In a photo posted on Instagram, the singer is seen wearing nothing apart from a pair of high waisted trousers – referencing the divisive Last Jedi scene in which First Order overlord Kylo (Adam Driver) shows off a topless look while connecting with Rey (Daisy Ridley).

The post also contained a rather apt caption of #KyloRenChallenge – and it wasn’t long before Mayer’s fans took up the unusual dare.

Despite being ripe for parody, director Rian Johnson recently admitted that the divisive scene was created in order to show the “intimacy” that exists between Rey and Kylo Ren.

“The keyword being intimacy,”, Johnson told People.

“And the idea that this was a way to just, why not step that up?”

He added: “The idea that, what’s even more uncomfortable having a conversation face to face with a person you don’t want to, is if they’re half-naked during it, while you’re having to do it.

“It was just another way of kind of disrobing Kylo literally and figuratively a little bit more.”

“He knew he looked good”, Johnson said of Adam Driver’s appearance in the scene.

“Adam looks so damn good because he’d been training hardcore for the past six months for those fight scenes. I’m like, ‘Eh. He looks so good. We should put him up there.'”
