Christopher Nolan’s new thriller Dunkirk is poised to tell the story of the harrowing World War II battle from the land, sea, and air

Christopher Nolan’s new thriller Dunkirk is poised to tell the story of the harrowing World War II battle from the land, sea, and air, and EW has an exclusive preview of Hans Zimmer’s sweeping score.

Unfolding over eight pulsing, increasingly tense minutes, “Supermarine” is the fourth track from the Dunkirk soundtrack, with a title that hints at aerial action: The Supermarine Spitfire was the premiere British fighter plane of WWII.

Dunkirk, opening July 21, centers on the evacuation of 400,000 Allied soldiers from the eponymous French seaport, as seen through the eyes of an inexperienced infantryman (Fionn Whitehead), a fighter pilot (Tom Hardy), and a civilian at sea (Mark Rylance).

Nolan has said the film will create suspense without focusing on graphic violence. “While there is a high level of intensity to it, it does not necessarily concern itself with the bloody aspects of combat, which have been so well done in so many films,” he told the Associated Press in April. “We were really trying to take a different approach and achieve intensity in a different way.”
