Mindy Kaling is back in front of the camera filming the sixth and final season of The Mindy Project

Mindy Kaling is back in front of the camera filming the sixth and final season of The Mindy Project, the creator and star revealed on Twitter Monday.

Kaling tweeted a photo of her character, Mindy Lahiri, sitting at a desk and looking befuddled. “We back,” she wrote. “Day 1 of shooting the final season of #TheMindyProject.”

In a previous interview with EW, Kaling said they’re “really excited about this last season.” “What’s weird is, Mindy is married at the end of the season 5 finale,” she continued, “but she has never been married in the series, so that’s incredibly fun for a character who’s been obsessed with [marriage] and has come close many times, and seeing her disavow it for a while after her disastrous breakup with who she thought was her soulmate. And now she’s married! The final season is the final time — it’s the best time — to confront what that reality is for her. And really, we’ve put her through the ringer.”

She also talked about the decision to end the comedy after six seasons, explaining that the show has seen these characters through so much already and that it felt like time to say goodbye. “We started this series when she was single, and now she’s married and has a kid and she has a stepdaughter,” she said, “and it kind of just felt like [a few] more episodes was all we needed to wind this down.”

The Mindy Project will return to Hulu for season 6 this fall; all five seasons are currently streaming on the service.
