There’s a first time for everything
There’s a first time for everything, and no one knows that better than the drag queens in EW’s exclusive new trailer for the upcoming comedy Cherry Pop.
The comedy, which features several RuPaul’s Drag Race graduates including Bob the Drag Queen, Latrice Royale, Detox, and Tempest DuJor, follows several performers across a single night at a failing drag bar, comically exploring the ladies’ catty backstage backstabbing and the onstage antics of the club’s flashiest showgirls. When a newcomer (Lars Berge) shows up for his first night under the spotlight, he struggles to carve a niche for himself next to his seasoned sisters (vicious competitors, to boot) and a legendary staple on the scene who comes to terms with her life as she preps for her final night in drag.
“Girl. I don’t know how long this night has felt for y’all, but let me tell you, backstage, this is one hell of a night,” Bob tells an eager crowd waiting to see Berge’s character’s debut. “It is time for somebody to get that cherry popped!”
Footage that follows sees the queens taking hilarious jabs at each other (and other people) as they dress themselves (and their faces) behind the curtain.
“Listen here you 1987, Rhythm Nation, fat ass, Janet Jackson wannabe!” Detox quips to another queen in front of a makeup mirror. Later, Bob throws down an epic insult of his own, calling a seemingly drag-phobic character a “Toby Keith, Duck Dynasty, Devil’s Rejects, John Wayne-looking, mayonnaise-on-a-grilled-cheese-eatin’ sandwich muthaf—a!”
Cherry Pop premieres July 10 in Los Angeles as part of OutFest and screens the next day at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre. The film hits VOD later this fall. Watch EW’s exclusive trailer above, and check out the movie’s poster below..
