Netflix & Marvel brings Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist together to save NYC.

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been eagerly awaiting the release of the latest addition to the universe, Marvel’s The Defenders. This new season will bring together some of the studio’s best loved heroes. Marvel will team Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist together in this Netflix Original series. It has been revealed that the first two episodes will be directed by S.J. Clark whose credits include Orange is the New Black.

When is The Defenders Coming Out?

This trailer, released by the Netflix YouTube channel, at the beginning of April 2017, shows the four main superheroes that make up the Defenders. While only 16 seconds long, the teaser left fans with a lot to consider.

If you look at the top right the time is given as 08:18. During the trailer Jessica Jones notices the security camera through which we watch, and punches it at exactly 08:18:20:17. Or 08/18/2017. An unintentional coincidence? Another case of empty fan-baiting? Or something more significant?

But there’s more.

The most eagle-eyed of fans also noticed the numbers on the top left of the screen.

This looks suspiciously like an IP address. Typing 23.253.120.81 into your browser takes you to the New York Bulletin archive. Fans of Daredevil will recognize this title; this is Karen Page’s (Deborah Ann Woll) new employer. If you scroll beyond the fake news stories and covers archive a thin grey ribbon at the bottom states, “Watch “Marvel’s The Defenders” All Episodes Streaming Only on Netflix August 18”.

So there it is. The Defenders will be hitting screens in early Fall.

Who are Marvel’s Defenders?

The reason The Defenders series is such a hype machine is that over the last few years Marvel have been slowly introducing us fans to the characters. In partnership with Netflix, Marvel has released a series for all four members of the Defenders team.

Daredevil - Charlie Cox

Daredevil was first to hit screens in April 2015. Matt Murdock aka Daredevil is played by Charlie Cox. British born Cox is reviving his biggest role to date. You may recognize him from his recurring role in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire as IRA volunteer Owen Sleater.

Jessica Jones - Krysten Ritter

Jessica Jones followed in November 2015. Jessica is played by Krysten Ritter, who many will recognize from her role in AMC’s hit series Breaking Bad as Jesse Pinkman’s (Aaron Paul) doomed girlfriend, Jane Margolis.

Luke Cage - Mike Colter

2016 saw Luke Cage land his own show. Cage is played by Mike Colter. Colter, while starring as Luke Cage in his own Netflix Original show, also featured in Jessica Jones. Outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his highest profile role was portraying boxer Big Willie Little in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby.

Iron Fist - Finn Jones

The fourth and final member of the Defenders squad is Danny Rand aka Iron Fist, played by Finn Jones. Iron Fist’s Netflix series was released in one big dump in March 2017. Jones, also British, can be recognized from HBO’s mega hit series Game of Thrones where he plays Loras Tyrell, brother to recently-deceased main character Margaery Tyrell.

What About The Defenders Trailers? Are There Any?

At time of publication there are three trailers released.

Stick makes a return

The first trailer was released in July 2016. It is 58 seconds long and serves as little more than an announcement that the series will be released in 2017. The trailer, set to Nirvana’s ‘Come As You Are’, is a cryptic affair at best. The voiceover towards the end is that of Scott Glenn, confirming the return of Stick (Daredevil’s mentor) in this new series.

Could this perhaps signal the inclusion of the murky ninja order known as The Hand? Sworn enemies of The Chaste, of whom Stick is the leader.

The hand seen at the end of the trailer makes this seem likely.

Who are The Hand?

The Hand is an ancient clan of ninja that feature prominently in the Marvel universe. Practitioners of occult magic, these are some bad dudes. They have the ability to murder and resurrect people to become slaves of The Hand.

They feature heavily in the comic books and have surfaced in Netflix and Marvel’s partnership in the first season of Daredevil as well as Iron Fist.

What’s happening in the second trailer?

The second teaser trailer, watch it above, has already been milked for significance in revealing release dates. But what can we learn of the characters?

The title of the trailer, Midland Circle Security Elevator B may seem fairly oblique. But fans of the second season of Daredevil will know this as the organization behind the massive hole opened up in New York city. It seems likely this is where the gang are throughout the trailer.

This series is set in the immediate aftermath of the action in Daredevil’s Season 2. Judging by the on screen chemistry between the characters, it would seem that they are all newly acquainted. Well… apart from Jessica and Luke of course.

Luke Cage and Jessica Jones become acquainted in Netflix and Marvel’s Jessica Jones

The official trailer is released

Marvel and Netflix released the first full cinematic trailer in early May 2017.

It gives scintillating detail on how The Defenders meet, with Jessica Jones being rescued from police interrogation by Matt Murdock aka Daredevil. We also see how Luke Cage and Iron Fist meet. Spoiler, punches are thrown.

We knew their remit was to save New York City, but until now we didn’t know from whom. This trailer confirms that they will be fighting a resurrected Elektra, the Hand and a new enemy called Alexandra, played by Sigourney Weaver. In a recent interview with Fandango she said, “Basically the four heroes come up against this really nice woman, who I'm playing”.
