Everything you need to know about the new Mummy film.

The Mummy is back again! The horror franchise and late 90s action trilogy is getting a reboot with Tom Cruise taking over battling the supernatural creatures. This film is far darker than the previous films and is a straight up reboot with no connection to Brendan Frasier's previous adventures in the desert. It is also the start of the 'Dark Universe' of Universal films.

The Mummy Cast

Universal

Tom Cruise - Nick Morton

Nick Morton is a man that we know very little about, however fan theories online think he might actually be Van Helsing in disguise. A team is being built. Crowe is already playing Dr Jekyll and Johnny Depp is signed up to play the Invisible Man in a future film.

Add this to the fact that Javier Bardem is going to be Frankenstein’s monster and there are hints that Universal are trying to create an interconnected franchise like Marvel have. It would make sense for someone with the star-power of Tom Cruise to be at the center of it all.

Universal

Sofia Moutella - The Mummy / Princess Ahmanet

When the trailer reveals that her tomb wasn’t just a burial site, it was a prison you know she’s probably not going to be a goodie. The character is loosely based on the Egyptian goddess Amunet.

We don’t know a lot about Amunet. She was a consort of Amun, was worshipped in Thebes and seen as a protector of the pharaoh. This means that the on point bangs Sofia Moutella sports in the film could be actually extremely historically accurate and we wouldn't even know. Makes you think.

Universal

Annabelle Wallis - Jenny Halsey

Halsey is an Egyptologist brought in to advise Morton on what he has stumbled across. She is saved by Morton during the plane crash at the cost of his own life. Annabelle Wallis previously appeared as Jane Seymour in Showtime’s The Tudors.

Universal

Russell Crowe - Dr Henry Jekyll

Crowe’s character shares a name Robert Louis Stevenson’s protagonist in, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Should we read anything into the fact he looks a bit dodgy and his named after another famous monster? Who knows (yes).

The Mummy Trailer

Trailer 1

The first trailer released is tense, and much more of a nod back to the stories original horror roots. It opens with Tom Cruise on a plane and everything goes wrong from there.

Trailer 2

The second trailer has more fighting and reveals a bit more of why Tom Cruise’s character might want to dig up such an evil mummy.

Trailer 1 - Special Edition (no music)

At at around the same time as the first trailer being released a version was leaked online that didn’t have the complete soundtrack. No music, just a lot of sound effects and grunts. It turns a tense plane crash into a weirdly funny slapstick scene. Universal kept getting it removed from the Internet but we found a copy here for you to enjoy.

The Plot of The Mummy 2017

Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) is a soldier for hire, while searching for artefacts with his partner in the Middle East he accidentally unearths Ahmanet. An Egyptian Princess who was entombed for committing terrible crimes thousands of years ago. She awakes and attacks London as she grows in strength - Nick must stop her no matter the cost.

The Mummy 1999

This film not only kick-started a franchise it also re-started a genre of films - people digging about in tombs (we’re looking at you National Adventure). Brendan Fraser as some sort of scoundrel and Rachel Weisz as an expert egyptologist with an even more scoundrelly brother played by John Hannah.

Arnold Vosloo almost steals the film as the High Priest Imhotep who becomes an unliving killing machine who is afraid of cats. It’s an adventure with comedic moments that grossed over $415 million worldwide.

The Mummy Returns

He’s back again for more unliving high jinks. Only this time there is another monster in the mix, the Scorpion King played by the Rock. Dwayne Johnson is a bit too charming to be a baddie - and so ended up getting his own spin off film.

Rick and Evelyn O’Connell’s son is in it, and is really annoying. Imhotep is back, and also Anck Su Namun (Patricia Velásquez) who was criminally underused in the previous adventure. The scale of everything is bigger and louder. This film made even more than the previous one gaining $433 million worldwide.

The Mummy 3 Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor

This was Brendan Frasier's final outing battling the unliving. The action is moved to China where Rick O’Connell is helping Zi Yuan (Michelle Yeoh) deal with Jet Li’s Dragon Emperor. This time Evelyn O’Connell is played by Maria Bello instead of Rachel Weisz. Luke Ford plays Rick and Evelyn’s now grown-up son and is slightly less annoying. The film was critically panned (getting 12% on Rotten Tomatoes) but ultimately went on to gross $401 million worldwide, a big number but less than the previous two films.
