"We have a lot more to say now than we did back when we were 13..."

Jenny Hollingworth and Rosa Walton have known each other since they were children. After bonding in music class, the two realized they should be making music together, and Let's Eat Grandma was born. Their debut album, I, Gemini released in June 2016 and received praise. And while they're still finishing up school, the teen musicians are performing on the festival circuit this summer, as well as preparing for their next album. We had a chance to chat with Jenny and Rosa about how they started, their musical evolution and what's next.

Hometown: Norwich, England

You two have known each other since you were children. So what were your first collective memories of music?

We began our musical journey in recorder class in Year 2, where we bonded over our respect for the instrument. As kids, we were also very into Singstar on the PS2. We used to do a great "Shut Up" by the Black Eyed Peas.

What's the story behind the band name?

There’s a meme about commas, which highlights the drastic difference between "Let's Eat, Grandma" and "Let's Eat Grandma." Our band name is the second. Some people think we’re really into punctuation, some think we’re cannibals.

From the time you started the band to now, how have you two seen yourselves evolve as musicians?

I think we're a lot more aware of what we're doing in relation to writing now than we were when we were making the first record. Now we're surrounded by lots of friends in music, have seen loads of gigs and listened to loads of albums. We're much more immersed in the music industry as opposed to being in our own bubble.

Not knowing much about other music worked in our favour for the first record because we just played what we thought sounded good without being restricted by any boundaries, but I think we're able to create much more deliberate things now. We've had so many more experiences. So lyrically, we have a lot more to say now than we did back when we were 13, too.

If you could play anywhere, where would it be?

Japan would be cool.

What are the plans for Let's Eat Grandma in 2017?

We're playing lots of festivals this summer - Primavera, End of the Road, Secret Garden Party and Bestival, amongst others around the UK and Europe.
