Portland group explores the concept of time travel in new single.

What would you do if you could go back in time and change how things happened or just live them again? Or perhaps live a time period for the first time? And what about into the future? The theory of time travel is a popular though, whether it's boarding an actual time machine, a tricked out DeLorean or finding some other way to skip across the boundaries of linear time. It's that very conundrum that the Portland band Souvenir Driver explore in their latest song "Voices of a Traveler."

As singer/guitarist Nate Wey explains it, "the idea for the lyrics was to use a character who wanted to change their past so much, they go back in time regardless of the consequences." With that in mind, the group ran with it. The song evolved from a jam session and a riff before coming together during a recording session at a cabin in the woods. "I remember sitting on the floor at about 3am in the morning and realizing that we were kind of hearing the song for the first time," says member Travis Hendricks. "It's what I describe as "meeting the song." It's one of my favorite parts of recording."

The song they met glides along that undeniable riff while the character begins their journey of self-dissection and realization through the webs of time. "I had the concept of using the idea of time travel to explore something that is unavoidable," says Wey. "What interested me most was this realization that the protagonist was really wanting to change a part of themselves."
