There's a certain swagger to the new track “Freezing Blues” by Brooklyn quintet Damn Jackals. Could it be the edgy guitar rhythms and spunky guitar solos? The horn section? Or singer Beau Croxton's self-assured delivery that sounds so classic and rebellious? You can practically see the band decked out in leather jackets, collars up and smoldering like some anti-hero greaser.

According to Croxton, "Freezing Blues" tackles the idea of "the type of cold, loneliness that reduces the heart to burning carnage and leaves the subject so crippled with emptiness and anger that he is rendered utterly unrecognizable."

As Croxton explains it, the track has had quite the timeline from idea to fruition. "'Freezing Blues' started as a hook that I had crafted years before Damn Jackals." During their recording sessions for the band's upcoming double LP, Crooked Castle (Vol. I & II), they decided to revisit the hook and shake it up with a bunch of their influences including T. Rex, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Lux Interior and Captain Beefheart. Croxton worked together in tandem with their producer Mike Goehler to build "the dynamics of 'Freezing Blues' to represent the heavy contrast of cold sorrow and burning anger."
