Harmonizing trio from Canada breaks out with super sweet single "Ocean Tide."
Hometown: We grew up in Newmarket, Ontario a half hour north of Toronto
Homebase: Two of us are in Toronto and one of us is in Newmarket
Why form a band with your siblings?
I was writing music and played in a few bands in high school and it just made sense to bring my brother and sister into it. They were at home and could play along so I could hear different instrumentations of what I was writing and it was easy having band practices in our house growing up so we just keep going with it.
Obviously you grew up in a musical household …
Yeah, both of our parents play instruments. My earliest memory of playing music was jamming in the basement on a toy guitar while my dad was playing his trumpet. [Music] was just always there. I think both my parents had music on and around all the time and it fostered an interest in music for me. As far back as I can remember I was playing toy guitars and hitting pots and pans, and this was encouraged. Brianna and Daniel and I took lessons growing up as well, so jamming together became something we did.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, John Mayer, Dave Matthews, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers were my high school foundation, but that doesn’t really do justice to the truth of it, though. Gungor and Mother Mother were huge influences on what Bordeen sounds like. It’s hard to narrow down now because there are so many bands that inspire us, and our sphere of listening and influences has grown a lot in the past 10 years.
Does being from Toronto, Canada, influence your work?
I think being a part of the Canadian music scene has been really influential. Growing up you don’t realize that the music you are hearing is different than the music being heard in other places. A lot of our favorite bands are Canadian artists.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
Collaborating with Paul McCartney would be pretty sweet.
What's your craziest band story so far?
When we were touring out west we didn’t realize that gas stations close super early in the prairies, so after almost running out of gas in the middle of the night we found a gas station and slept beside the pump, to be awoken by truckers eating breakfast a few hours later...
Are you working on an album?
Our upcoming six-song release is called Stiver. The street we grew up on is called Stiver and musically we wanted this material to be as authentic and honest as it could be. It’s easy to work in the studio and make yourself sound like something different using sounds and manipulating things. For this album, we really tried to have our voice come through authentically in the music.
What is your single “Ocean Tide” about?
“Ocean Tide” is about being okay with not being in control of the situations around you. I think that you get to a point where you are trying to force certain outcomes in your life and you’re trying to control things that you eventually figure out that you can’t, and the song kind of speaks to letting go of that.
Do you have a musical memory of Myspace?
I remember going on to Myspace constantly to hear what was happening in terms of new songs being dropped by every artist. It was the hub of songwriters and musicians and you could find everything you were looking for in one spot. It’s crazy to see all the new sites and apps and projects that have been started that came about because of Myspace.
