The UK indie rock outfit talk band beginnings, initial success and 2017 plans.
London, Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool. These cities have given us some of the biggest names in British music. However, Hartlepool-based PLAZA have proven that good music can be made outside the musical centers. The young rock quartet have been making a name for themselves with the release of their tracks, "Totem," "Blood Orange" and "Youth." Their latest single," Origami," is off their upcoming EP, which is set to drop later this year.
We had the chance to get to know PLAZA a little bit better. Find out more about them below.
Hometown: Hartlepool, England
How did Plaza get together?
We just basically spent the summer of 2014 being silly, writing and recording in Swinny's (drummer Matty Swinbourne) summer house - nothing serious really, then it just all came together.
Hartlepool isn't necessarily considered a mecca for music. So how has the town influenced your sound? If it has at all?
We just write true songs. The town will definitely play apart in our sound, we write songs about things that have happened to us... even if the town is deprived of culture it will play a part in our sound, even if no one can detect it.
I read the band came out of just playing around a few years ago. So how does it feel to be taking your music around the UK?
It's a bit surreal if I'm honest, when we first started messing around, we didn't think any of this would have happened, it didn't even really cross our minds until we realized what we could actually do if we wanted.
Best moment on the road so far?
There has been way too many.
What's in your tour survival kit?
Cherry Carmex, Nicholson (our guitarist), nail biting repellent, chewing gum.
As of right now, what's the biggest highlight for you as a band and separately?
Ahh, there are so many to name! Playing a sold out Albert Hall supporting rat boy was pretty mental, supporting Gengahr on their U.K. Tour. There are so many.
What is "Origami" about?
Origami is about being separated from the world. When you do origami, you're so intrigued in it, it's like you have been detached from the world and brought up in your own.
Although you've released "Origami" recently, are you currently working on new material? Perhaps an album in the near future?
We have got lots of music written and demoed. We've got an EP coming out in April, but then I think it will be time to start recording the debut.
Dream collaborations?
Lennard: Gwen Stefani
Swinbourne: Tyler the Creator
Hamilton: R Kelly
Nicholson: Brian May
What's your definition of success?
Success is just having fun doing what we're doing. It's a privilege that we have the opportunity to do this, so anything else is a bonus.
Since starting the band, how have you guys seen yourselves evolve as musicians?
Yeah definitely, we've worked with various people and having a lot of musical friends, it's like we are progressing every day.
Who should we be listening to right now?
The Pale White, Trudy & the Romance
What can we expect from PLAZA in 2017?
Just lots and lots of touring, a few festivals and new songs.
