David Cassidy‘s family is dropping everything to be by his side as he remains in intensive care after being hospitalized for liver and kidney failure earlier this week.

“There had been many family issues because of his alcoholism, but they are all reuniting in support of him,” a source close to Cassidy, 67, tells PEOPLE. “He was delighted to see them.”

The Partridge Family star’s rep previously confirmed to PEOPLE that Cassidy was initially in a medically induced coma, but on Saturday was conscious and surrounded by family, including his son Beau Cassidy, ex-wife Sue Shifrin (whom he was married to from 1991 to 2016) and brother Patrick Cassidy.

Cassidy publicly admitted his struggle with alcohol abuse in 2008. He has also battled substance abuse issues, which involved a stint in rehab in 2014.

In February, Cassidy revealed to PEOPLE that he was battling dementia, explaining that he was speaking out because he didn’t want fans to think his alcohol abuse was relapsing.

“I was concerned people would mistake my alcoholism with my diagnosis,” said Cassidy.

He added, “It’s a tricky business.”

Of his dementia, Cassidy —whose grandfather and mother both suffered the disease — shared, “I was in denial, but a part of me always knew this was coming.”
